Tier 2 provincial gold medal for Winston Churchill High School Bulldogs
The Winston Churchill High School Bulldogs claimed the Tier 2 boys Alberta Schools Athletic Association championship Saturday in Calgary.
Winston defeated Robert Thirsk 29-10 in the final to claim gold, as the Bulldog defence held strong all game long.
The Bulldogs advanced to the final with a 45-7 win on Friday over Sturgeon Composite. That followed Winston’s opening-round win, a 64-7 drubbing of Lloydminster Composite.
The Churchill roster included Adam Borho, Andrew Durling, Blayze Elder, Brody Mason, Caden Roelofs, Colten Hemsley, Eric DeLauw, Jeff Herbison, Jesse Tortorello, Josh Peters, Justin Durling, Keanen Ceron, Marcus Pauly, Matt Stewart, Noah Lang, Nolan DeLauw, Nyles Clark, Peydon Keith, Sean Adams, Sebastian Czarny, Seth Brown, Slade Elder, Taylor Mason, Teigan Pritchard, Tie Dewacht and Yannis Boenn.
Coaches included Jonathan Dick and Nevin Morrison, and the trainer was Craig Oman.
Churchill’s Tier 2 girls rugby team, the Griffins, also played for a provincial medal on Saturday. Winston dropped a 37-26 decision in the bronze-medal game against F.P. Walshe.
The Griffins began provincial play with a 39-12 win over St. Mary’s. However, the team fell in the semifinal, 24-12 to Foothills Composite, which pushed the team to Saturday’s third-place game.
