English as a Second Language (maximum of 15 credits)
The ESL program meets the needs of students whose native language is other than English. The ESL program at Churchill operates on the philosophy that acquisition of a second language is best accomplished in an integrated program, coupled with rich language experience in the ESL classroom. The program is organized around five performance levels. Students are awarded five credits upon successful completion of each of ESL Levels Two, Three, and Four. As the goal of the program is to integrate students into the regular high school program as quickly as possible, students will be registered into up to three courses that complement their ESL studies.
Special Projects 10, 20, 30
This option permits students to undertake self-initiated projects in areas of special interest but not within the scope of the regular curriculum. Students are directly involved in the selection, planning, organization, and evaluation of the project. To earn 3 credits the student must undertake a project involving 75 hours of work; for 5 credits, 125 hours.
Work Experience 15, 25, 35
Work Experience enables students to obtain training and experience in areas of personal career interests. Areas of study are generally within the scope of the regular curriculum. Work Experience Sponsors in the community are directly involved with students on actual job sites.
Academic Assistance
The staff of WCHS recognizes the critical importance of assisting students who are experiencing academic difficulties. Students with identified learning needs requiring added support have access to the Student Assistance Instructional Centre (SAIC). Other support may take the form of individual or small group coaching, provided school assistant resources are available.
